2020 NFC North Division bets: Who will win?

Odds to win the division: Packers +160 Minnesota Vikings +160 Chicago Bears +650 Detroit Lions +850

The Vikings have a couple of tough games to negotiate early in the season, particularly road games at the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks. Minnesota is actually the only NFC North team to play three divisional games in three successive weekends – Week 8 through 10 – and that’s never an easy task. But Minnesota’s home schedule sets up nicely. After hosting the Packers in Week 1 and the Tennessee Titans in Week 3, five of the remaining six U.S. Bank Stadium games are against teams not expected to make the playoffs: Week 6 vs. the Atlanta Falcons, Week 8 vs. the Lions, Week 11 vs. the Dallas Cowboys, Week 12 vs. the Carolina Panthers, Week 13 vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars and Week 15 vs. the Bears. In fact, after Tennessee visits Sept. 27, Minnesota does not face another 2019 playoff team at home. Of course, the NFL landscape and win-loss records change dramatically, but right now Minnesota’s SOS (strength of schedule) doesn’t look terribly daunting. The VIKINGS (+160) are the play here – every $10 wagered profits $16 if they win the North.

2020 NFC North Division bets: Who will finish second?

The Vikings are the easy choice to win the NFC North after they reached the NFC Championship Game last year and then signed quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency. I also fully expect Aaron. The National Football Conference – Northern Division or NFC North is one of the four divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). Nicknamed the 'Black and Blue Division' for the rough and tough rivalry games between the teams, it currently has four members: the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings. At least according to Las Vegas, the NFC North is wide open in 2019. The Vikings, Packers and Bears all have 2-to-1 odds to win it via VegasInsider.com.

Odds: Packers +175 Vikings +175 Bears +300 Lions +550

The Packers won the division last season at 13-3, but were they really THAT good, or was the schedule just overly favorable? We’ll find out this season, as they have a murderer’s row to start. Five of their first eight games are against 2019 playoff teams, plus there’s a game vs. Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Trips to the New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers and Tampa are brutal, as well as an opener in the Twin Cities, which will get them off on the wrong foot. The Packers could be 2-6 through the first eight games, but don’t eat and drink yourselves into a beer and cheese stupor, Pack fans. I believe this team has the talent and stick-to-it-iveness to rattle off eight straight wins in the final eight games to get themselves back into the playoffs. After it’s wheels up from San Francisco Thursday, Nov. 5, the rest of the sked is a breeze. Home wins over Jacksonville, Chicago, the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina will have Aaron Rodgers & Co. thinking playoffs again. The key to their season might actually be a Week 16 home game against Tennessee Dec. 27, which could make or break the season. Play the PACKERS (+175) here.

2020 NFC North Division bets: Who will finish third?

Odds: Bears +175 Vikings +280 Lions +300 Packers +310

The Bears added QB Nick Foles as the Monsters of the Midway hope Saint Nick is the answer to their prayers. Spoiler alert – he’s not. The Bears still needs a lot of work before they’re going to overtake the Packers and Vikings, and this number of +175 isn’t very friendly for someone to take a chance … even with a small-unit wager. Just no value here. The Bears “should” be able to cobble together a 3-3 record through the first six games, and the back end of the schedule sets up favorably for a potential 4-1 finish. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the middle of the schedule features a trip to meet the Los Angeles Rams, a home date with the Saints, a roadie against the Titans, a Monday home date with the Vikings, a road trip to the Packers (after the bye, at least) and a home game against the Lions. Chicago could lose all of those games and be in freefall. If the Bears surprise in one or two of them, a winning season is within reach. I’m still going to AVOID betting on a third-place prop.

2020 NFC North Division bets: Who will finish fourth?

Odds: Lions -159 Bears +225 Vikings +800 Packers +1000

Poor Lions. The prognosticators are picking them to be the caboose in the NFC North, and who am I to argue with them? The front and back end of the schedule is not set up well for the boys in Honolulu Blue and Silver, although there will be some excitement in the middle. The road schedule isn’t too terribly demanding, but these are the Lions, and there are never any slam-dunk wins. QB Matthew Stafford is coming off a serious back injury, too, so that’s a major concern for the fortunes of Detroit’s season. He was playing at an MVP-caliber level before going down in 2019, though. The home schedule sees New Orleans and Tampa Bay coming in, as well as division toughies Green Bay and Minnesota, so Detroit will be lucky to get to .500 at home. Even with the juice, betting the LIONS (-159) to finish last is worth a small wager – every $1.59 wagered would profit $1 if they do so.

2020 NFC North Division bets: Exact order of standings

The exact order of the standings should be Vikings (12-4), Packers (10-6), Bears (7-9) and Lions (6-10). As such, backing a VIKINGS-PACKERS 1-2 FINISH (+325) is very, very attractive.

You can also bet PACKERS/VIKINGS TO FINISH TOP 2 IN ANY ORDER (+110), and that should be a slam-dunk play. If you like what you see above, the exact order of finish (1st Vikings, 2nd Packers, 3rd Bears and 4th Lions) pays +500.

Each team in the NFC North has a legit shot to take the division crown in 2020. Yes, each team, even the lowly Detroit Lions whose offense could carry a defense that was on its heels all season long in 2019 when quarterback Matthew Stafford went out with an injury.

Who Is Picked To Win The Nfc North

Then, there are the Minnesota Vikings, whose hard-nosed defense and old-school style of football epitomizes a rough, tough division.

Next, you have the Chicago Bears, who follow a similar breed of football as the Vikings.

Nfc North Predictions

Lastly, you have last season’s undisputed champions in the Green Bay Packers. They still have Aaron Rodgers, but the rest of the team appears to be weaker than those of years’ past.

North

This article discusses why each North team can be a good bet at the online sportsbooks, but also why each team is a risky bet.

1. Chicago Bears (Odds to Win: +400)

Why They Will: Man, you gotta love that defense! Sure, the team could’ve stood to have garnered more sacks and created more turnovers. But hey, when you allow just 18.6 points per game, you’re most definitely onto something great.

And that’s exactly what kept the Bears in games last season, with 11 of their 16 games decided by just one possession in 2019.

The Bears return a core that includes marquee players like Akiem Hicks, Khalil Mack, Danny Trevathan, Kyle Fuller, and Eddie Jackson. They also went out and signed Robert Quinn, who will free things up for Mack on the other end.

The Bears own one of the league’s great defenses in 2020. And trust me when I say they will build upon their eighth-place finish in total defense from 2019.

The team also boasts some decent pass-catchers in Allen Robinson, Anthony Miller, and Tarik Cohen, to name a few. Even if the offense was anemic in 2019, don’t be surprised if the Bears move the ball better in 2020.

Why They Won’t: The quarterback controversy can creep in if the Bears’ offense lays an egg in 2020 as they did in 2019. And it’s never a winning situation when you have two veteran quarterbacks going at it all season long.

Here’s a summary of what could happen and it can strike at any time during the long season:

  1. Mitchell Trubisky posts a bad game.
  2. Fans, the media, and even half the locker room clamor for Nick Foles to start.
  3. Trubisky is having another bad game and gets pulled. Foles comes in and plays lights out.
  4. Head coach Matt Nagy names Foles the starter. Foles plays well but posts a couple of bad games.
  5. Glad to see Trubisky back in the saddle.

And the cycle continues at least one more time throughout the 17-week gauntlet that is the NFL season. All of this can be coupled with the fact that the offensive line is still very suspect and neither running back David Montgomery nor Cohen have separated themselves as a lead back.

With that in mind, it could be another long season in Chicago and a wasted bet.

2. Green Bay Packers (Odds to Win: +175)

Why They Will: This time will go as far as quarterback Aaron Rodgers takes them, and there’s always the chance he will take them far now that he’s under some pressure. Perhaps, he may even take the team farther than the NFC North Championship and the trip to the NFC Title Game, which he took them to in 2019.

Sure, he is declining stat-wise, but Rodgers is still one of the best in the league at elevating the talent around him. He also has a dynamic running game featuring three good running backs in Aaron Williams, Jamaal Williams, and a Derrick Henry-like power back in A.J. Dillon.

On defense, the Pack has one of the best pass-rushing duos in Preston and Za’Darius Smith, who combined for 25.5 sacks in 2019.

But the main key to the NFC North Championship remains with Rodgers.

And until the rest of the North proves they can beat him, the Packers may remain the safest bet to take the division in 2020.

Why They Won’t: Talent-wise, this is one decimated football team from top to bottom. Yeah, Rodgers, the Smiths, and the running game are intact. But the Packers are a mess just about everywhere else. Is anyone other than Davante Adams a relevant player in the pass-catching unit?

Who Will Win The Nfc North 2019

Ditto on the offensive line, where David Bakhtiari is the only real shoo-in as a starter. On defense, the Packers lost three major contributors in their linebacking unit in Blake Martinez, Kyler Fackrell, and B.J. Goodson.

Unless Rodgers can work more magic than he’s used to at age 36, expect the Packers to fall from grace in 2020.

Sure, it’s foolish to count out Rodgers, but even he may have a tough time lifting the Packers out of the mess in the receiving unit and on defense, sans the Smiths.

The defensive backfield has turned some heads, but unless someone steps up to stop the run in Green Bay, expect them to deal with a full workload and a lot of pressure.

3. Minnesota Vikings (Odds to Win: +160)

Why They Will: The Vikings own a stellar defense and it starts with their front seven. Players like Danielle Hunter and Ifeadi Odenigbo are outstanding pass rushers who opposing lines and quarterbacks must remain aware of.

At linebacker, the trio of Eric Wilson, Eric Kendricks, and Anthony Barr is one of the best in the game at playing both the run and pass. And the safety duo featuring Harrison Smith and Anthony Harris is a lethal combo of hard-hitting and ball-hawking. Minnesota ranked in the top half in virtually every major defensive category in 2019, including the top five in points allowed, interceptions, sacks, and turnover differential.

Who Will Win The Nfc North

On offense, the team has the right players for the run-first, tight end-friendly dink and dunk passing game. It’s a formula for success in Minneapolis.

Why They Won’t: The Vikings boast a strong defense but their defensive backfield lacks prowess at corner. Holton Hill, Jeff Gladney, and Mike Hughes comprise a new trio of starters at corner for the Vikings.

And given the fact they’re playing aerial assaults against quick-thinking quarterbacks, expect them to pick at the Vikings’ unknown corners if they beat the Minnesota pass-rush.

The team also lacks depth, with Cam Dantzler and Harrison Hand as the primary backups at corner. Both of them are rookies, might I add. And it could crush an otherwise promising defense.

On the other side of the ball, can the receiving unit help? Justin Jefferson is a rookie, and Adam Thielen is coming off one of his worst seasons as a pro. While the offense favors backs and tight ends, an ineffective receiving unit can allow opponents to key on the Vikings’ strengths. And that will lead to losses.

4. Detroit Lions (Odds to Win: +475)

Why They Will: Quarterback Matthew Stafford boasted a good season up until his back injury forced him to miss the final eight games.

Along with his return, the Lions also boast strong players on offense, including a fantastic trio of pass-catchers in Kenny Golladay, T.J. Hockenson, and Marvin Jones. And they have a solid committee at running back in D’Andre Swift, Adrian Peterson, and Kerryon Johnson—all a recipe for success on offense.

On defense, the Lions can ride it out with more ex-Patriots joining Matt Patricia and company.

These are players who bought into the Patriots’ culture long ago. Patricia has ousted most players (most notably Darius Slay) who weren’t fans of what the head coach and Bill Belichick disciple implemented.

Who Will Win The Nfc North

This Lions team is a far cry from what they were when Patricia took over two seasons ago. And with a hot offense and Patriots-like defense, expect them to threaten in 2020.

Nfc north predictions

Why They Won’t: The Ford family made it clear that it’s crunch time for Patricia and his crew. It’s either win or get out at this point, and Patricia’s defense has only regressed since he took over in 2018.

Who Will Win The Nfc North Division

Sure, they look far more Patriots-like now than they had in the past two seasons.

But is it already too little, too late in Detroit? How patient is the Ford family willing to be with Patricia? And a coaching change, even one early in the season, probably spells another reboot during 2020.

Also, if Stafford’s back problems persist, who will pick up the slack? Last season, it was an abysmal duo of Jeff Driskel and David Blough. In 2020, the Lions have Chase Daniel, not much of an upgrade.

Who Will Win The Nfc North 2021

Conclusion

The Bears’ defense is reminiscent of those championship-caliber units the team put together back in 1985 and 2006. Is 2020 another season in which the Bears can take the NFC North and perhaps go deep into the playoffs? Hey, if that offense can at least somewhat click, the answer is yes. What about the others?

  • The Packers can ride Aaron Rodgers to a division championship and for that reason, they’re a popular bet among most of us. But he has seen a lot of decline in recent years, and this is by no means the most talented Packers team he’s had.
  • The Vikings can win on defense with that lethal front seven and blue-chip safeties. Their offense can click as well. However, question marks remain at their receiver and corner position units.
  • The Lions can boast one of the hottest offenses in football with a defense to match. But is it already over for Patricia and company in Detroit?
